The individual accused of a crime will be given a ‘Basic Rights Form’, if he or she is not being represented by an attorney. The form summarizes the rights of the accused and the options for resolving the case. The form also describes the various pleas.

The form explains what it means to plead guilty, no contest, or not guilty. The person accused of the crime might also have a chance to speak with the city’s prosecutor prior to the hearing if the individuals is not represented by an attorney.

Hearings are conducted on a “first come, first serve” basis. Trials are usually held after all of the defendants have entered a plea. No trial will take place on the first court appearance.

If an individual does not have an attorney, he or she must still appear and request one before the case is scheduled for a trial. If the person retains a criminal defense attorney at the arraignment, then the attorney may be able to waive the person’s appearance and enter a not guilty.
