The Ohio Attorney General’s Office provides a wide array of services that range from investigation to trial to appeals in order to support local prosecutors. During the initial investigatory stages, the Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) provides assistance at crime scenes. BCI has three main divisions: The Identification Division serves as the central repository for all criminal records in Ohio and maintains fingerprints, photographs, and other information related to arrests within the state; the Investigation Division includes a Crime Scene Unit that contributes forensic equipment to local investigations, the Crimes Against Children Initiative that helps local authorities investigate and prosecute those who commit crimes against children, and a Polygraph Unit that administers polygraph tests suspects and witnesses; and the Laboratory Division that processes more than 200,000 pieces of evidence a year. If a criminal case goes to trial, the Attorney General’s Office also has a Special Prosecutions Section that is comprised of experienced prosecutors who have backgrounds in handling complex cases such as child sex offenses. The Special Prosecutions Section can act, upon request of a local authority, as lead prosecutors where there might be a conflict of interest or assistant prosecutors in cases “where their specialized knowledge can be utilized or if there is a lack of local resources to effectively prosecute a case.”
