Types of Cases Heard in Delaware County Juvenile Court

The Delaware County Juvenile court has jurisdiction over cases where the alleged offender is a minor. If the individual is not being charged as an adult, the court will fairly and impartially decide whether the youth is eligible for a treatment or rehabilitation program or if he or she must serve a jail sentence. Delaware County Juvenile Court generally hears the following types of cases:

  • Neglect
  • Dependency

Penalties in Delaware County Juvenile Court

Minors are treated differently in the criminal justice system. They generally serve less severe sentences and have more opportunities to rehabilitate than the average adult.

Juveniles could receive a number of other penalties in lieu of, or in addition to any other criminal sentences imposed by the court. Penalties that do not include jail time may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Community Service
  • Probation
  • House Arrest
  • Placement in a detention facility
  • Drug or alcohol treatment
  • Driver’s license suspension
  • Medical or psychological treatment

Delaware County Juvenile Court Programs

Considering that it is the County’s mission to avoid harsh criminal punishments for juveniles, the number of initiatives promulgated by the Court should come as no surprise.

The Delaware County Juvenile Court created number of programs to aide youthful and juvenile offenders in dealing with issues that may be related to their delinquency. Such programs include the following:

  • CASA Program of Delaware County – created to help children who are victims of violence, sexual abuse, and neglect.
  • Drum Circle – the Treatment Court of Delaware County, designed to help participants gain control of any illnesses or addictions that they may have.
  • SAP (Suspension Alternative Program) – for students who have been suspended from middle or high school. Allows students to participate in the program in lieu of being suspended from school.
