Branches of the Court of Common Pleas in Licking County

The Court of Common Pleas is divided into four divisions. It is divided as follows:

  • The Juvenile Division: consists of administering matters involving minors under the age of 18, including traffic, civil, criminal, child custody and abuse, neglect, and dependency cases.
  • The General Division: consists of administering matters involving both civil and criminal cases.
  • The Domestic Relations: consists of administering matters involving the dissolution of marriage, child custody matters, and child support.
  • The Probate & Juvenile Division: consists of administering issues that involve wills, trusts, and estates. In addition, the Division deals with juvenile guardianship and estates involving minors.

Court of Common Pleas Court Procedure

Each courtroom is different. When faced with a criminal charge, understanding the courtroom etiquette can go a long way in appearing professional and prepared. In Licking County, Judge Branstool has outlined a number of protocol measures that should be followed when entering the Court of Common Pleas.

Case Scheduling: The Court’s Docket Administrator sets cases for trial and pretrial conferences. Generally, multiple trials are scheduled on the same day and criminal trial take precedence over civil trials regarding the order of the day. A case will be schedule for trial between sixty (60) and 150 days after an individual has been arrested or indicted. Trials are schedule from Tuesday to Thursday, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Pretrial Conferences: Pretrial conferences are scheduled approximately four weeks before the trial date. All pretrial conferences are scheduled on Fridays, beginning at 8:30 a.m. All defendants are required to appear in person, unless given leave by the court.
